FEMFAT inside ANSYS – quick guide to imminent release

The ANSYS Workbench is a highly integrated tool for analysis engineers for a wide range of finite element analyses.Therefore, it was obvious to integrate a high-quality tool for fatigue analysis to enable fatigue analyses in a comfortable way. And the “FEMFAT inside ANSYS” ACT extension in the ANSYS Workbench environment has the following benefits: 

  • Continuous workflow at the Workbench project level
  • FEMFAT user interface similar to ANSYS Mechanical
  • Access to the Parameter Manager for use of the Design Explorer or other optimisation tools
  • Properties defined on the basis of ANSYS Mechanical geometry
  • Weld seam definition on the component geometry and independent of remeshing
  • Option to display the analysis results in Mechanical
  • Option to examine the project in FEMFAT GUI
  • Integration of job file commands (all FEMFAT functions)
  • Improved data management so that you can store different FEMFAT simulation systems within a project in accordance with a predefined Workbench data structure diagram

Fatigue analysis simulation with FEMFAT inside ANSYS requires 

  • a valid FEMFAT basic license (LMX and LSP licensing systems for ECS are supported),
  • an extension compatible with your ANSYS WB version and a corresponding,
  • compatible FEMFAT version.

No additional license is required to use FEMFAT inside ANSYS. All that is required is the BASIC module and (possibly) additional modules. The current “FEMFAT inside ANSYS” extension (Version 1.1) as well as ANSYS WB 18.2, 19.0 and 19.1 is only compatible with FEMFAT 5.3 and 5.3a.

Installation is easy using a .wbex file, which can be downloaded from the FEMFAT homepage www.femfat.com under Downloads. The different FEMFAT simulation systems at the project level can then be seen (see Figure 1). The systems are implemented in a similar way to FEMFAT GUI, i.e. for a FEMFAT basic analysis the FE simulations must already be available at the project level, though not the FE analysis results themselves.

One special feature is the “Data Transfer” system, which monitors the workflow (see Figure 2) and ensures that only systems compatible with the respective FEMFAT simulation method can be connected (for example, SPECTRAL requires stresses from a modal analysis).

The FEMFAT job is implemented in ANSYS Mechanical as defined by a valid workflow. Here, too, a structure similar to FEMFAT GUI was created for implementation (see Figure 3).

A few special features should be mentioned here in brief:

  • The extension automatically creates the .cdb structure file, even if the FE analysis has already been carried out.
  • Properties can be defined directly on the CAD structure, or alternatively groups (Named Selections) can be selected.
  • All parameters that can be defined using a numerical value can be used directly in a workflow for evaluation by DesignPoint or optimisation software.

The Standard Training on February 5th and 6th 2019 and the Advanced Training (SPECTRAL) on February 7th 2019 (at ECS) will be done with a special focus on the FEMFAT inside ANSYS extension.
